what i learned today

my monster name:

Your Monster Profile
Lethal Child
You Feast On: Power Bars
You Lurk Around In: Roller Rinks
You Especially Like to Torment: Groupies

(yes, this really is what i did with my saturday afternoon. but at least i'm AT the library.)

correction

This is why I constantly tell my students to proof-read! The cats were admiring their first web presence and found a MAJOR typo in my last post. We are not psycho twin parents and did not name both cats the same thing. :) The second cat (Pounce) is really named Mabrouk. It means Blessed. Hopefully this will soothe his wounded cat-ego.

Blessed and Beloved

I think Nelly might have competition for the cutest cat in the family. The darker boy is Habib Polo Elaazami. He was named Polo NOT by me but by the adoption agency who had him before us. I have been asked numerous times if I wanted to keep the name. But there is only room for ONE Polo in this family and I'm it. :) Habib means "Beloved" in Arabic.

This is Habib Pounce Elaazami. For obvious reasons we changed the name Pounce --not really his personality and a bit... um... lame. Mabrouk means "Blessed" in Arabic. These photos were both from last night when they came home.

This photo was from the Adoption day at PetCo. Yes, that's a plug for a chain corporate owned store. They donate the space for the no-kill, volunteer agency Purrfect Pets to display their cats. So, they can't be all bad, right?

I'm sure we'll be hearing more from these cats as time goes on. Habib is quite interested in this whole typing thing.

for lori

after making disperaging remarks about dolphin tattoos and completly offending one of my very good friends, i have promised to reform my ways and be a more open-minded and accepting of all forms of self-expression. to that end, here is a positive article about the labrys. lori just got a HUGE one on her arm.

NPR : Dolphin: You Know How to Whistle, Don't You, Steve?

i thought this was so cool. did you also know that research has shown that dolphins can recognize themselves in the mirror?! no wonder all those sorority chicks get tattoos of dolphins jumping over the sun on their behinds!

Talk of the Nation, May 12, 2006 · Researchers studying dolphins say the mammals have distinct names, and they refer to each other in their whistles -- something no other animals are known to do.

kids and desk chairs

when i was in school, i remember my favorite time was when i could just sit and read - and not have to listen to all those silly boys yelling from the back of the room. but then, i spent a lot of time in class reading while the teacher was talking. how many times did mr. ambs yell at me for reading stephen king while he was trying to convince us that puncutation mattered?

Active classroom frees kids from desk chairs - Children's Health - MSNBC.com

i think this classroom idea has merit, espicially for kids (typically boys) who don't learn while trying to sit still. but the high-tech gadgets make it an impossible bar to set for most students whose schools are struggling to buy old-fashoned text books for every student.

Nelly's secret dance club...

So, I came home this afternoon and found nelly dancing in the bathtub.... it looked something like this.....

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Weird, isn't it?!? it's genre is something like jazz infused with ballet, breakdancing, and ummm.... yeah..... strange cat

love you,

getting older

in case you didn't know, it's our birthday month. i was actually feeling pretty good about getting older and getting wiser until i read this story about this woman who is 128. 128!? (<--- you can read the story there). and i realized how much more there is. i'm not sure i want to live to be that old (only 5 of her 13 kids are still alive. i'm positive i don't want to have 13 kids.), but it gives 31 a completly different perspective.

hate speech

ok, so have you heard about the MSU professor who emailed the Muslim Student Association at MSU about an educational protest the students were conducting? the professor, who has tenure, called the students "dissatisfied, agressive, brutal, and uncivilized slave-trading Moslems" and advised them to "return to your ancestral homelands and build them up yourselves instead of troubling Americans."

here's the Detriot Free Press article about what happened, including the actual email from the professor: MSU prof's e-mail outrages Muslims

what do you think?
