oh, what a night ...

overheard in the pharmacy breakroom tonight: pharmasist 1 to 2: would you take a job that offered you 3 times your pay to make a biological agent that would kill people? (good philosophical question, i think ...) pharm 2, after pause: who would i be killing? 1: it doesn't matter. africans. 2: if they're not muslim, then no.

it's possible he was joking. it's possible he lost his entire family in 9/11 or the subsequent war. it's possible he's racist. i don't know. it just made me afraid.

i've been trying to write something about dying, maybe because i've seen a lot of it lately. i think the thing that's the hardest to take is the lack of dignity people face while they're dying at the hospital. tubes and bottles and bags and nurses and doctors looking at you all the time. there's no privacy for family to greive. bodies are treated as facinating objects to "treat". (oh, god ... the pharmasists are talking about femisist women now. what the hell have i gotten myself into??) last night i felt completly overwhelmed by the fear of ending up in that position. even people who recover from an accident or illness are put through these really horrible procedures and completly lose control of everything, from breathing to bladder functions to movement. i guess the reality of it just hit me all at once. i'm not sure how doctors and nurses are ok with getting old, knowing the physical reality they may face. i chose quality over quantity.

8 hours of drugs

i promised yesterday that i'd write about my new job. but i realized today that there's not that much interesting about what i do. pharmacists and pharmacy techs make the drugs, put labels on them and put them on the rack. i then take them to the floor where the nurse and patient are waiting. sometimes, the nurses are overjoyed to see me with their narcotics. sometimes, they're just pissed it took so long to get through the process. but usually, i just leave the meds on the table and leave without being noticed by anyone. other than the pregnancy pandemic (there must be a dozen women "great with child" in the pharmacy alone! i'm thinking i should stick with the bottled water) and the complete lack of phone service in the dungeon that they call the pharmacy, it's not a bad job to get me through school. and, because i'm all over the hospital all day, i see a little bit of a lot of what happens. for example:

there was a code on one of the floors. i've never seen so many people crammed into such a small room. they just needed big clown hair and red noses and a phone booth. i heard the person pulled through.

the ped icu's are the most difficult. today, on the same floor, there were two families praying for an injured child. it was heartbreaking.

at the end of the shift i was headed up to the ped inpatient floor with a bunch of chemo for a kid. as i approached the hall i wanted, this family stopped me and asked if i speak spanish. the five year old son was trying to help me understand what the family wanted, but i just didn't get it. after asking all the nurses on the floor for someone who speaks spanish, and feeling inadequate and useless, i took the chemo to the sick kid's nurse. she was really happy that she could keep her promise to the parent of the sick kid that chemo would start tonight. that's when the girl scout troop showed up to sing christmas carols and had out gifts to the kids. i about started crying in the middle of the chaos.

i met a guy from bosnia who works in food service. he's been here about 8 years, he came here right after the war.

more later ...

who are the people in your neighborhood?

so, i know i haven't written a real post in quite a while. and while i am sincerely sorry to all those who wait with baited breath every week for a new installment of "what's going on in dena's life", to you i say: you need a real hobby. i just finished my last day of the semester, and, let me tell you, december has never looked so good! the only grade i know for sure is my internship, which i passed (on a pass-fail scale). yea, me!!! i should be getting an A in my policy class, cuz i did very well on the paper re-write and the final was pretty simple. there's only one class i have no idea about cuz i don't know what i got on my paper, project presentation or final. those were about half the grade, so i'm keeping my fingers crossed. i'll keep you posted. but, in the meantime ...

i was thinking today about all the ... ummm ... interesting people i've met in the last three months, mostly at the hospital. these are the people in my neighborhood.

today, i met the quintessential tucson hippie. i would have sworn to you she just stepped out of 1976, cept i would have only been a year old. she had the glasses and everything. she made the point to tell us about 6 times that she's been in tucson since 1989. i guess even 15 years in tucson doesn't qualify you for unquestioned "native" status. (yes, we're very picky about who can claim to be "from" tucson. including people whose families were here before the border got moved.)

i got to shadow another social worker this week. it was really great to get another perspective on the whole hospital/social work thing. claire has the pediatric floors, including the ped icu. she's totally amazing at what she does. every day all she sees are sick babies and their families. and she does it all with so much compassion and warmth. i think what struck me most about her was her gentleness. i could tell the parents just felt like they had a supporter and they opened up to her. she seemed to have all the time in the world for each parent, despite the fact that she had 2 other floors of patients to see. i know this was just a snapshot of her day, and probably there are times she feels rushed or irritable with parents. but, she presented a way of interacting in the world that i respect. she told me that she loves what she does and will be there till she retires.

there's more, but it will have to wait for another night ... i'm beat. oh, and remind me to tell you about my new job. all i can say right now is: i thought drug running would be more lucrative.

**parental advisory warning**

this post contains some explicit psychological references that might be offensive to some. please be advised that children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with weak hearts should not ride this ride. *grin*

having spent the semester learning all bout the myriad of emotional and genetic disorders that you can inflict on your children, i thought this was pretty funny.
