direct quote
Jeff wrote this about a patient yesterday:
"Pt very concerned that staff @ UMC were going to force him to have a rectal tube. Pt did get in touch with ex-spouse who also did not want a rectal tube."
(I swear, I can't make this stuff up.)
Would you like a rectal tube? They're handing them out for reduced price today at UMC.

United States: Army (and Navy, Air Force, Marines)
There are currently some 65,000 gay and lesbian Americans serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, many of them deployed in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. As they fight and die for their country, they were told this week by the nation's highest-ranking military officer, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Peter Pace, that their relationships are immoral, the intolerable equivalent of adultery. These remarks, clearly out of step with American public opinion, were cheered from the usual quarters. Cultural right leader Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) issued a statement "applauding" Pace "for maintaining a personal commitment to moral principles." But it also prompted outrage from Americans who understand that this outdated “Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy does not reflect our values or enhance our security. Take action to repeal the ban here.

enough?
i was just upstairs going to get a bagel for breakfast and i heard the distinct sound of skin hitting something. i round the corner to see a teen age girl had fallen. an adult male and a young boy (maybe 7 or 8) were standing next to her. i assumed they were her father and brother. i start to walk past this obviously tense scene when i hear a slap and the adult yelling. i turn to see the man in the boy's face, grabbing his arms and yelling. i also see 3 or 4 people walking by this scene. heart pounding (the guy was twice my size) i go over and calmly let him know that there are more appropriate way of disciplining a child. he tells me that he's tried everything else with the kid and this was the only way. so, i repeat. he seems to calm down a little and starts to walk off, but neither of the kids follows. he waits and says: are you comming or are you going to wait with the police? (i think the kid had wondered off earlier and had been found by security.) i waited while both kids decided what to do and just watched the father, my message being that you are watched and your behavior is wrong. they left the caffeteria and i got my bagel.
i was (and am) shaken by the incident. did i do the right thing? is something (even so small) better than nothing? did i potentially cause the kids more trouble? i felt empowered by my role as a social worker (even tho i'm not practicing one today), but so disapointed that other people (clearly some doctor students and nurses) did nothing. what's the matter here?

i met a woman today who is 99 years old. she'll be 100 in august. her "kids" are all retired; she's lonley because she's outlived all her friends and most of her family (including 2 husbands); and she believes she's lived a good life. but she's not ready to go yet.

damn television

i got home and flipped on USA network cuz they usually have monk or law & order. but, no. they are playing the movie Big Fish, which is one the saddest/happiest movies there is. (and it makes me think of rene cuz her email is bigfishproductions.) at it's heart it's a love story and the story of a boy trying to understand his father. isn't that what every child wants: to understand their parents? how do children reconcile their parents (the flaws, the stories, the imperfections, the human-ness) when the parent is dying or has passed away?
here are some of my favorite quotes:
Most men, they'll tell you a story straight through. It won't be complicated, but it won't be interesting either.
(son's vision of his father's funeral) Everybody's there, and I mean everybody. And the strange thing is, there's not a sad face to be found, everyone's just so happy to see you.
I know better than to argue about romance with a French woman.
There comes a point when any reasonable man will swallow his pride and admit he made a mistake. The truth is... I was never a reasonable man.
Church people drive too slow.
It was that night I discovered that most things you consider evil or wicked are simply lonely, and lacking in the social niceties.
I was thinking about death and all. About seeing how you're gonna die. I mean, on one hand, if dying was all you thought about, it could kind of screw you up. But it could kind of help you, couldn't it? Because you'd know that everything else you can survive.

some of today
UMC is the only trauma hospital in tucson now, so we get traumas from all over southern arizona. if someone who is involved in a trauma comes to the hospital and, for whatever reason, they don't have identification they are assigned a "trauma name." these can be the place they came from and two letters that differentiate them from the other trauma from that location. for example: gilbert, hj; baja, hi; or iron, hj. someone just got admitted to the ICU with the name: CABBAGE, HJ. i am of the belief that there are no circumstances under which people should be named after vegetables. can you imagine being the family: yes, mr. so-and-so, your daughter, cabbage, hj, is in room such-and-such.
also, i just delivered methadone to 7E. that's the maternity floor. *sigh*

chaplin
it's ironic that i was talking with lori the other day about thinking of becoming a chaplin in my next career. yesterday on 3NE there were two patients who wanted to talk about their spiritual beliefs with me. the second asked me to call the chaplin for him so he could talk more. i think more and more whatever it is we "put out there" - energy, ideas, hopes, fears - come back somehow. when i called the chaplin, she was the warmest, most welcoming person i talked to all day. her energy just pulled me in and i felt like i'd known her, even tho i've only seen her around. i hope she was able to connect with my patient and provide some comfort for him.
on a side note, i put the term "faith community" in my note regarding the first patient, as in "this patient gets a lot of support from her faith community". like, her church, but also people who are in her community who may not go to church or whatever. seemed clear to me. jeff said: what do you mean by faith? ummm ... faith?
