starbucks

i was walking to my car in the umc parking lot the other day and as i got to my noticed that patty's car was parked next to mine. i knew it was patty's because she had a starbucks coffee cup in her cup holder in the front seat with her name clearly written on it. i started thinking about how that might be unsafe - you know, stranger danger and all that. so, i'm gonna start using a pseudo-starbucks-name whenever i order from there. i was thinking "amber" but lori says that sounds like a porn star (i didn't ask how she has that bit of information). i certianly don't want to be confused with a porn star (and in my scrubs, that's a real possibility). so, what about carol or martha or barbara?

asking

you'd think that, as a social-worker-in-training, i would be comfortable admitting when i need help, especially from those systems that i know are designed to help. my doctor prescribed singulair for my allergies (which are HORRIBLE here in tucson!). when i had insurance it was a reasonable $20/mo.; without insurance, i'll be paying $150/mo. on my part-time job and school loans, that just doesn't seem reasonable. so, i did my research and found that merck pharmaceuticals has a patient assistance program for people in my shoes. "great," i think to myself. but my doctor has to sign the prescription part. ok, just another roadblock. cept now i've put it off so long that i'm out of the medication and my allergies aren't getting any better. so, i also have to ask my doctor for some samples to get through until merck decides if i'm eligible for their program. i feel needy and ashamed that i have to ask. i mean, "shouldn't" i be able to take care of it myself? then i realize i'm doing to myself all the same things i tell my clients they shouldn't do: be afraid of asking for help. i made the call today to the doctor and the receptionist with whom i spoke was very nice and will call me back later. hopefully, my asking will provide more than just an opportunity to further explore my psyche.

coke & a smile

one of the coke vending machienes at UMC has the slogan "helping is thristy work" on the front. it made me wonder if people who don't care are less thirsty. or, do only people who drink coke care? what about people who drink, say ... (diet) pepsi? do they care less? perhaps it's a genetic thing: people who have a preference for other beverages aren't likely to go into helping professions. makes you think ...

pushing

in the hospital there's a clear hierarchy. people who push things and people with no communication devices are at the bottom. doctors rarely even carry anything and they have more pagers than god. i wonder if there are better things to push than other things. are x-ray pushers higher or lower than people pushers? are trash pushers on par with drug pushers? where do the morgue pushers fall?

waiting.

waiting. 364 days. doing the same thing every time. knowing it will be more disappointing than the last time. but doing it anyway. and waiting for another 364 days.

unexpected

i know i talk a lot about how irritating the people in the pharmacy can be. from the racist pharmacists to the other transporters who have the maturity of my cat and the obvious and undeniable nepotism, i could have many more reasons to leave this job than i do to stay. it's really the non-pharmacy staff who have made it worth staying. for example:

yesterday i was waiting for the elevator with bill, one of the maintence men. bill is a pretty typical blue collar guy, hard working and a little rough. i was taking some narcotics to a patient and he commented on the drugs. i said that if i was ever in this hospital i'd need a lot of this stuff. he agreed and said that before he started working here he thought his life was pretty bad off and he'd "boo hoo" himself a lot. since working here he has seen people who are in really bad shape, kids with cancer and parents who have to deal with that. he said that it's given him a better sense of what's important and how lucky he is. i was deeply touched at how well he could define the impact this place has had on him and that he'd actually let himself observe and feel about everything that goes on.

i've made friends with victor and the new guy, simon, who take care of the trash. victor has a landscaping business on the side that he'd like to be his full-time occupation, but it doesn't have benefits or pay enough. simon used to be a truck-driver and has this great jamacian accent. there's the other maintenence guys, and all the cafeteria transporters who i cross paths with in the halls. i feel more a part of the community of "unseen employees" than i do the pharmacy and i think i like it that way.

oh my god ...

... it's early.
