New Conservatives?

I was driving and listening to the radio with Dena's last post about the NeW group on my mind. I was wondering how these young women define being a conservative and what that identity means to them. What do they actually DO that makes them Conservatives? Coincidentally (are there coincidences?) the program I was listening to was a discussion/interview focused around the definition of current conservatism. The basis of the radio show was this article in The New York Times about the new book Encyclopedia of American Conservatism. For a little background: Radio Open Source is generally more progressive so this discussion is a gentle criticism of conservatives by the radio show host --and, interestingly, a criticism of the Bush Administration by one of the conservative guests because of the Administration's impulses towards large government/spending.

I agree. What?

The only thing wrong with conservatism are:
1. the superior attitudes of their leading advocates (Rush, et. al.) and

2. the fact that being conservative makes it more difficult to do those things that are NOT expedient.

That's it.

These are the ONLY things wrong w/ conservatism? kidding. well, sort of. The other thing not listed here is that inherent in conservatism is preservation --a good thing when we talk about preserving natural landscapes (hmm... but do conservatives?) but not when it comes to preserving flawed social instutions (i.e. Jim Crow laws, unequal access to education, interests of business over workers). And I think that there are social structures that we will agree need to be changed. But, maybe this is what you're trying to say w/ point #2? That The Good comes at times by changing What Is?
